“It’s the difference between ‘very nice’ …and getting exactly what you want.”
Thomas James Hale
People often ask me how I got into cars. The honest answer is that I don’t remember a time when they weren’t the center of my world. Before I could talk, I made car noises. Before I could walk, I had car opinions. One of my earliest memories is building an entire highway system through my childhood home using whatever was in the fridge—including (yikes!) cottage cheese for toll roads. “Cars, cars, cars, T.J.” my mother would say with a smile.
At its core, my career has been shaped by one guiding principle: the subject matter that gives you the most joy is the one worth dedicating your life to. For me, that has always been cars—past, present, and future. That obsession has become the foundation of my professional life, allowing me to help clients deepen their understanding of the automotive world and experience its most significant icons in new and meaningful ways.
I have spent the better part of my career operating at the leading edge of hyper-specialized and historically important automobiles, working between New York and Paris. I’ve exhibited some of the rarest and most valuable cars across the United States, Europe, and the Middle East. My work has been recognized internationally, including Keith Martin’s Sports Car Market 40 Under 40 list of next-generation leaders shaping the collector car world, and as an automotive lifestyle figure by Auto Heroes France.
During the formative years of my career, I worked with global brands including Ferrari, Maserati, and McLaren, experiences that helped refine both my eye and my standards. That foundation led me into consulting roles focused on exotic, rare, and historically significant classics—a direction I have never looked back from.
I am known among peers and clients as a finder of the impossible. Forgotten prototypes, hyper-masterpiece classics, concept cars, and modern supercar commodities: if it exists, I know where it is and why it matters. I’ve been fortunate to access some of the world’s most influential private collections and to participate in the shows and events that define the upper tier of the collector car industry.
What differentiates my work is an uncompromising pursuit of context. I don’t stop at the car itself—I follow the story through archives, rare books, private networks, family records, forgotten warehouses, historic accounts, and eccentric collections. I don’t stop until the subject is fully consumed and understood. That depth of knowledge allows me to identify not just excellent cars, but the car—the precise moment, period, and example that aligns perfectly with a client’s taste and life rhythm.
The strongest collections are never accidental. They are cohesive, deeply personal, and built from a balance of old and new, iconic and obscure. The more time I spend understanding a client, the more refined and resilient their collection becomes.
Ultimately, cars give me something rare: feedback. The deeper I dig, the more they give back—history, mystery, and an ever-expanding horizon of discovery. That feedback loop fuels my work and keeps the pursuit endlessly compelling. What began as an obsession remains an obsession, and it continues to shape the work I do and the collections I help bring to life.

“It’s about the way it makes you feel, not the attention it garners”
A great car is one of the most tangible connections we have to the past — the experience of driving a Mercedes SSK or a Ferrari 288 GTO today, is the very same experience their first owners felt decades ago. For me, it’s never just about the car itself, but the story that accompanies it and the memories it creates — it’s about the way it makes you feel, not the attention it garners.
What fascinates and excites me is placing someone in a car that genuinely blows their mind — introducing them to something they may have always known existed, but never realized could be so special. Whether it’s the hushed opulence of a 1920’s Rolls Royce Phantom interior or the guttural induction sound of a Lamborghini V12; the goal is always to create a moment that puts a new smile on a clients face.
Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the world’s leading high-end car auctions and respected classic car purveyors. Those experiences gave me the chance to travel the world in search of truly special cars — cars that would make even the most jaded enthusiasts drop their jaws. I want to share my obsession with others to try and glean a similar type of obsession from them.
James Chase was built around that philosophy: a deeply personal, highly curated approach to finding the right car or asset for the right individual.
